ClassGraphic Alike’ (a/k/a “Lee”) is a 17-year old Black lesbian growing up in an urban Brooklyn landscape.  Eager to explore and expand her sexual identity, Alike’ is frequently in conflict with her concerned mother and encouraged by her supportive English teacher. Set against the disco-lit background of “club life” and church, Alike’ meets an unexpected partner.  Relationships and the bonds of love between family and friends are tested as Alike’ defines her identity and prepares for the next phases of her life. Dee Rees’ first independent feature became an instant LGBTQ film classic for its strong and sympathetic vision of adolescent sexual identity and the multiple perspectives that surround its lead character.
