Troubling Waters: The Spirituals, Freedom, and African American Narratives NEW - Online

This course examines the discourse of freedom encompassed within the spirituals—the foundational genre of African American music. The spirituals are analyzed in the context of the slave narratives, a foundational literary genre of African American experience which similarly engages themes of freedom from bondage, salvation, and redemption.
