ClassGraphic Paterson is a 2016 drama written and directed by Jim Jarmusch which stars Adam Driver as a bus driver and poet named Paterson. Based on poetry by William Carlos WIlliams, the titular character is inspired by the New Jersey city and five-part poem of the same name.  Real-life poets provide the movie’s linguistic infrastructure. The main character, Paterson’s, poems were written by Ron Padgett, whose “Collected Poems” won a 2013 Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Students will read the poem "Paterson", and some collected works of Ron Padgett and then view the film. Students will also be encouraged to visit the Great Falls of Paterson which inspired the poem and subsequent film.
