ClassGraphic Bryher was the pen name of the English novelist, poet, memoirist, and magazine editor Annie Winifred Ellerman. She grew up unconventionally in Victorian times and often played at presenting herself as a boy or man; her amazing life story includes her relationship as lover of the poet h.d. (Hilda Doolittle), friendship with Freud, the founding of the film magazine Close Up, work with myriad figures of early film and magazine industry fame, living through both World Wars, and working to rescue 100 refugees (mainly professionals and students of the psychoanalytical schools) from Germany and Austria during WW2. Her impact on the history of literature, film, and even psychoanalysis as a field of study is not well known, and her autobiographical writings among others help us understand more about her and our modern selves. She was in a sense among the first "liberationists" and "modern women," and casts a long shadow.
