This workshop examines the subversive potential of the theatre as explored by playwrights since the classical Greek period. In particular, the playwright, Aristophanes, shows us the theatre’s potential to disrupt the civic status quo using comedy and satire.
Through examination of his play Clouds,
workshop participants will learn how Aristophanes challenged his contemporaries in terms of public and civic speech and the education of young Athenians. Indeed, he takes on such heavyweights as Protagoras and Socrates and would later influence Plato.
Participants will perform excerpts of texts attributed to Protagoras. They will also read scenes from Clouds
, as well as excerpts from Plato's dialogues Gorgias
