Mill Creek Marsh is a protected wetland within the NJ Meadowlands district. Today it is an important area for breeding wildlife, migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, including dabbling duck, shorebird, and wading birds, and wintering and migratory habitats.
The tide will affect what you see at Mill Creek Marsh. At high tide, the marsh shoreline is covered by six feet of water; at low tide wide mudflats are exposed. Channel width and depths will vary depending on tidal flow. If the tide is low, the channel will be narrow. If the tide is high, the channel will be broad. At mid-to-high tide, additional channels are available for exploration.
Before setting out in the company of experienced guides, students will receive a briefing conducted by a senior Hackensack Riverkeeper staff person who will explain the organization’s ongoing work and mission; and speak about some of the creatures you are most likely to encounter while on the water and in the wetlands.
PLEASE NOTE: We offer both single kayaks & tandem kayaks that fit two paddlers. These will be distributed on a first come, first served basis upon arrival at Laurel Hill Park.
If you need kayaking lessons ahead of the tour you can register for them individually through the Hackensack Riverkeepers.
