American democracy is currently under tremendous threat. But even before Trump, there were many ways in which the workings of the American political system diverged from democratic principles. In this talk we will examine the election of the president by the Electoral College, the undemocratic nature of the Senate, the drawing of district lines for partisan advantage, and declaring the electoral victor to be the candidate with a plurality, not a majority, of the vote.
