« back to classes page
As the Essex County Park system celebrates 125 years, find out how it all started. In 1867, Frederick Law Olmsted was invited to Newark to propose his ideas for a large public park in the city, à la Central Park in New York. It wasn't until 1895, when the nation's first county park system was formed, that Newark finally got that park as well as several others. Explore the benefits of a county system, how park sites were selected and the parkways that once linked the parks.
