ClassGraphic George Balanchine once said, "ballet is woman." As one might surmise from this statement, his choreography glorified women, and he was a father figure to many of them and husband to a few. Bettijane Sills was a soloist with the New York City Ballet in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during Balanchine's heyday as a choreographer. Through her first hand accounts, this lecture will frame and contextualize Balanchine's life and career in terms of his genius but also his patriarchal relationship to the female members of his company. Prof. McPherson co-wrote a book titled
Balanchine, Broadway, and Beyond: A Memoir with the former New York City Ballet dancer Bettijane Sills.
